My son has an early 90s Sierra, and when the original engine shat the bed, he replaced it with a 1.6 fuel injected engine from an early Vitara. Absolutely solid and bullet proof. It takes a proper hammering, but when it's worked hard can be very thirsty, but otherwise it's pretty reliable.
